HVAC Programs

If you want to become an HVAC technician, the first requirement you are expected to complete is getting the right education. Two of the most popular options when pursuing an education in HVAC technology are getting an associate’s degree or completing a certificate program. To make sure you get into a good program, you must take a look at the instructors teaching the courses and whether they are experts in the area you want to specialize in. In addition to this, a good HVAC course shouldn’t just prepare you for an entry level position in the field, it should also prepare you for the state licensing exam.

Curriculum and Requirements

During an associate’s degree in HVAC technology, you will go over concepts like temperature control, air flow, air quality, thermal comfort, and industry trends and expectations. Before you can apply to an associate’s degree, you need to have either a high school diploma or GED.
To get an associate’s degree, you will have to complete four semesters as a full time student and sit through 90 credit hours of coursework. The distinguishing factor of an associate’s degree is that it doesn’t just provide an education in heating, air conditioning, and ventilation technology, it also requires students to take general education courses in English, Mathematics, and Science. Course subjects specific to the field may include HVAC troubleshooting, furnace ignition systems, air pressure tests, and more.
In a typical certificate program on HVAC, you will be taking courses on supplementary mathematics, residential refrigeration, hydronics, and certification preparation. You may also be required to complete an internship to receive a more practical experience in the field.
